MOT Annual 2011 Nearest Faraway | How to measure the depth of the world Shuta Hasunuma + Ryota Yagi Sound Performance
"MOT Annual" is a series of events that the museum has been running since 1999 to introduce new Japanese/Tokyo art in the form of a group exhibition.
This year's exhibition, the 11th in its series, will feature works by six artists, with the subtitle "Nearest Faraway: Measuring the Depth of the World."
In today's world, where values are undergoing a period of transition in various areas, the world of art is no exception.
This exhibition introduces artists who, using familiar materials and techniques that could simply be called handcrafted, continue to create works that question their very foundations and where they stand. While their choices of materials and techniques are intentionally simple, the works they produce have a broad reach that seems to transport us to faraway places. Using everyday objects as a clue, each artist, in their own way, questions and discovers anew the structure of phenomena that are usually taken for granted, such as "seeing," "listening," "time," and "space."
Their unique methods - the flexible strength of their art - allow us to touch upon the depth and richness of a world that is essentially unknown. This is also one of the possibilities that art holds in our age, which is said to have become shortsighted and unable to wait. We hope that the six spaces opened up by the art of these six artists will serve as a small opportunity to change the landscape of the world we are familiar with.
